Opinions Needed
As a side note, I was determined not to have a name on the top 100 list which "Brooklyn" wasn't at the time we chose her name. Now that our baby is clearly a Brooklyn - can't think of naming her anything else - the name is now #52! Brooklyn went from not even being on the top 100 to #52 in three months! Brooklyn is going to be this year's Emma or Sophia...yes, I'm totally bummed out. I really wanted something original and unique but had roots from long ago, classic with a modern twist.

The exponential rate of hospital hours
Now for the specifics:
On Wednesday night, I thought it was possible that I might be leaking amniotic fluid. I called the Labor and Delivery line and they said to come in immediately. We arrived at the hospital around 9:30. The staff was great and even though they were incredibly busy that night, (they had eight deliveries, usually they have 2) the nurses put us in a triage room quickly. After the intial intake questions, the doctor did an exam and although she couldn't see any pooling fluid one of the tests she did came back positive for amniotic fluid.
At this point, they noticed I was contracting regularly every 3-4 minutes for 30 - 60 seconds each time. The Dr.'s thought I was very dehydrated (which can cause contractions) and Tim made me drink more water in 3 hours then I had my entire life prior to this moment. After a few hours of drinking water my contractions didn't get better, in fact now I could feel them and the contractions were coming every 2 - 3 minutes.
The Dr.'s decided to hook me up to IV fluids, which took six tries and finally they had to call in the Ansethgioligist. I remember joking that I should just call him the first, to which he replied, "I have better things to do" and I said, "Well, I have better things to do than be poked 6 times." We all chuckled but I'm pretty sure I made my point. Tim was trying to hold it together as his anger was mounting as he saw me being pierced again and again. (These were the thick catheter type needles)
The Dr. came back and repeated the amniotic test which also came back positive. The Dr.'s were pretty stumped at this point so we were left alone for awhile (around 4 am). The perinatal specialist said we needed to do an amniocentisis and they were going to inject blue dye into the fluid and if blue came out we could be positive that my water had ruptured.
At this point, they started preparing Tim and I for a long stay in the hospital and the very real possiblity that our precious baby girl was probably going to born in the next week or so. Very scary (I'm only 28 weeks now).
Well, the test came back negative (yay) and in a few hours my contractions became irregular and we left. We did have a bit of a blue dye scare later that evening so we needed to head back to the hospital where they administered the test again and monitered my contractions. Then we left.
That's the update -

Contractions
Ruff week this week. I'm sure when Kristens is feeling up to it she'll give you the full story from her perspective, but here are some of the highlights for now with some pictures.
- We had a private room for most of the first night after the ER part
- We know all about the early labor process now :]
- We know to ask for the anesthesiologist early since after 6 IV tries by various nurses, they had to bring one in to do it. (Poor Kristen)
- When you go to the hospital at night at 9pm and you haven’t had dinner yet, remember to bring food…
- Kristen knows what it feels like to have a very large needle pushed into her stomach and I got to watch, both them putting it in as well as on the sonogram so they could guide it. Crazy.
- Kristen is far braver than I am
- Nurses don’t really let you sleep
- All the staff at this Kaiser Labor and Delivery department are really really awesome (except one incompetent nurse)
- There is no place like home…

I've been sewing and crafting a few things for our little Brooklynn. The colors didn't really come out in the pictures, so please just trust that they do all go
together. I hope you like what I've done!

Baby Update!

I thouroghly enjoyed making something for my little daughter and I find myself falling more in love with her everyday.
Her movements are really incredible. I didn't know how I would feel when she began moving. Would I feel like someone had invaded my body, my space? (I am VERY big on personal space, the people in the Starbucks line (decaf of course) need to take at least three steps back. Standing closer to me does NOT make the line mover faster!) But I feel wonderful! I love this little person in my body, her space is my space. I love each one of her little kicks. Tim has only felt her the one time and every time he puts his hand on my belly she gets very calm...he clearly has this whole father thing down!
Just look at the clothes Tim picked out the other day! We went into The Children's Place because they were having a great sale and Tim started to get really into it. At one point we called to each other from across the store and we were each holding up the same onesie! Most of what we bought will be for next spring and summer as it is all shorts and skirts but it's never to early if there is a good sale!!
Happy Father's day to all those great dads!

Babys first photo shoot:
Big things are happening!
I have been feeling the baby move ever so slightly since I was about 18 weeks, but last night Tim actually felt the baby move too. Baby hadn't moved in awhile and being the gross worrier that I am, I started to get well, worried. Tim placed his hand on my growing belly and I told baby she needed to kick very hard so that daddy could feel it. And guess what? That's exactly what she did! It was the hardest kick to date and if baby keeps it up then I'll be black and blue. It looks like soccer just might be in her future! That or a punter on a football team.
We also did our first shopping trip for baby on Saturday. It was fun to research the best toys for babies and then hit the local Toy's R Us. (Okay that was a bit of joke, as our "local" Toy's R Us is an hour a way)
There was this bilingual alphabet drum on the top ten list, and when we walked by it in the store Tim kind of poo - pooed it at first. Until 15 mins later he was still playing with it! I can't wait to see the musical creations he and baby make together. It really gave me an inside peak at what a great father he will be. We found some great pink toys, some rattles and teethers etc., as well as a traditional glow worm. At any rate, it was fun to walk the aisles and look at all of the toys for every stage in her childhood. Tim keeps trying to buy the baby a Lego set, he actually really liked a moving construction truck set --- hmmm who were we shopping for, I forgot =) We had a great time playing with the toys ourselves!
I believe Tim is going to post some of my early belly shots and our latest ultrasound photos shortly - so stay tuned!

"Is it still considered sky diving if you don't use a parachute?" and other stupid things I've said since becoming pregnant.
"Do I have to work out the left leg too?"
"Make sure you go to the bathroom at home because the bathrooms in the mall are gross."
Upon hearing we're having a girl, "You might want to double check that."
Tim and I left the Sonographer's office on Tuesday shocked. After she told us we were expecting a girl, the sonographer had to call in a nurse to help Tim and I pick our jaws up off the floor.
As excited as I am, the prospect of raising a girl brings to mind a barrage of questions that I didn't have when I was positive Ziggy was a boy. Like, "How do I make sure she doesn't have my negative body image?" Teaching boys to have a healthy respect for both their bodies and food seems a lot easier. I mean really, does a boy care whether or not he fits into a size 0?
How do I teach a daughter to respect health and the body God gave her when I cannot lead by example? And speaking of respect for the body...I saw too many of my high school girl friends being told "Your body is a temple" etc, etc, only to give it up to the first boy who got a bit frisky. "I'm waiting" seems like an easy thing for a girl to say...but how do you impart to your child that those words and good intentions need to be backed up by action, or more accurately lack there of? I received the same sex talk as many of my girl friends but we seemed to have chosen very different paths.
Believe me I'm not saying raising boys is a walk in the park. I love my husband dearly, but I can guess there were more than a few times my mother-in-law wanted to pull out her hair. (I know my mother pulled out hers raising my brother, trust me I was there =) I just think I was more prepared for a boy and the fart, booger and sex jokes that are a natural part of boyhood. I had given up on the idea that we would have anything but another masculine Nice to add to the mix.
Don't take my doubts about my ability to raise a girl and think that I'm not excited. I LOVE many girl things. Pink is after all, my very most favorite color. My head is spinning with the excitement of nursery color schemes, tea parties, and tutu's.
I find myself wondering if she'll be kind hearted or stubborn. What activities will she like? What do I do if she wants to dance? What kind of man will she marry and will she want to wear my veil? (and then the Oh crap, we'll need to pay for a wedding!)
Where before I was thinking robots and space travel, I find that it is so much easier for my mind to get carried away with faux chandeliers and butterflies. If it was only up to me that nursery would be painted, decorated, arranged, and sealed off waiting for Ziggy's arrival within a week's time.
I guess the lesson here is that I have a bit of time. (But not to much time) I keep reminding myself to calm down Kristen, it's not like she's going to walk out of the womb!
